Asking for a deadline extension

You: Hi Dr Evans, sorry to catch you. Do you have a moment?

Dr Evans: Yes, briefly. I've got a meeting at two. What's up?

You: It's about the essay for your module, the one due on Friday. I've been ill for most of the last week, and I've fallen quite behind.

Dr Evans: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Are you feeling better now?

You: Much better, thanks. But I've lost about a week of work, so I was wondering whether it might be possible to get a short extension.

Dr Evans: How much more time do you think you'd need?

You: I think a week would be enough. I've done the research, it's mostly the writing I haven't finished.

Dr Evans: Okay. Just so you know, I can't actually approve extensions myself. It has to go through the extenuating circumstances form on the student portal.

You: Ah, I didn't realise that. Do I need any evidence for it?

Dr Evans: Yes, something like a doctor's note would be ideal.

You: I've got a note from the GP, so I can upload that. Should I do it before Friday?

Dr Evans: Definitely, as soon as possible. I'll let the office know you've spoken to me, which should help.

You: Thank you, I really appreciate that. I'll submit it this afternoon.

Dr Evans: Good. And look after yourself.
