Opening a bank account

Adviser: Hi, come and take a seat. How can I help today?

You: Hi, thanks. I'd like to open a bank account. I'm an international student, I've just moved here.

Adviser: Great. We've got a student account which is quite popular. Have you brought any documents with you?

You: Yes, I've got my passport, my visa, and a letter from the university confirming my address.

Adviser: Perfect, that's exactly what we need. Is this your UK address on the letter?

You: Yes, that's my halls. Sorry, can I ask, is there a monthly fee for the student account?

Adviser: No, it's free. It also comes with an interest-free overdraft, although for international students that's usually quite limited.

You: Sorry, what does overdraft mean exactly?

Adviser: It means you can spend a bit more than you've got in the account, up to a limit, and pay it back later.

You: Ah, I see. I don't think I'll need that, to be honest. What about transferring money from abroad? Are there any charges?

Adviser: There's a small fee for receiving international payments. It's all listed in this leaflet.

You: Okay, great. And how long does it take to get the card?

Adviser: Usually five to seven working days. You can set up the app today, though.

You: That's great. Let's go ahead with the student account, then.
